New details are emerging about the body of a 15-year-old boy found by police in woodland in Wilton, south-west Sydney.

A man has been arrested after the body of a 15-year-old boy was found in woodland in Wilton, about 80 kilometers south-west of Sydney, on Saturday morning.

A 32-year-old man remains in police custody as detectives continue to investigate the timeline leading to the boy’s death.

Police said the man was arrested after arriving at Narellan Police Station shortly after 4pm and no charges have yet been laid at this stage.

Police found the child’s body in a wooded area near Wilton Park Road around 7:30 a.m. After receiving a call from a member of the public out of concerns for the young man’s welfare.

Speaking to the media on Saturday afternoon, Acting Superintendent Tim Calman said police believed the 15-year-old was a local to the Picton area.

Acting Supt Calman said it was too early to speculate about the possible cause or timeline of events leading to the child’s death.

Preliminary investigations indicate the boy was part of a group of a dozen teenage friends camping in the area Friday night.

Deputy Supt Calman said: “The information we have at this stage is that there may be a group camping in that area and we believe people associated with this camping event may be involved.”

Deputy Supt Calman, answering journalists’ questions, said that at this stage there was no information about whether there was a fight in the campsite.

“It is probably too early to speculate whether this was intentional or an accident. This will form the basis of the ongoing crime scene investigation,” he said.

When asked about the nature of the child’s injuries and whether a weapon or vehicle was involved, Acting Supt Calman was unable to confirm details at this stage of the investigation.

“At this early stage in the timeline of what happened, we believe something happened on Friday evening, but the exact time as to what actually happened is still under investigation,” he said.

Police are speaking to multiple witnesses as they follow “a number of investigations” into the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death.

The area remained a crime scene on Saturday as the Homicide Squad assisted Camden Police Area Command detectives.

Acting Supt Calman said the boy’s family had been notified and he had expressed his condolences to the teenager’s loved ones in the meantime.

“It’s tragic that this young man was involved,” he told reporters.

“We extend our thoughts and feelings to the family as they go through this difficult time, and the family and their wider circle of friends will do so this afternoon in a difficult way as they go through this.

“The police will continue to support them as we try to get to the bottom of what is really going on.”

Police previously issued a second appeal to the public, urging anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage in the area or around Wilton Park Road from 6pm on Friday to come forward.

Members of the public with information that may assist investigators are asked to contact Crime Stoppers or Camden police on 1800 333 000.
