Take it to the bank: Cardinals crush Jaguars in quarterfinals

KASSON – The LeRoy-Ostrander/Lyle-Pacelli football team had one of its most complete efforts of the season, defeating Renville County West 50-0 in the Class Nine Man quarterfinals on Friday night.

The Jaguars (8-4 overall) threatened to score just once, but that chance ended when LOLP’s Tyson Stevens picked off a pass at the eight-yard line with the Cardinals leading 6-0 in the first quarter.

Following that pick, LOLP scored on its next four possessions as Camden Hungerholt ran for a 75-yard, 1-yard and 6-yard TD run. He rushed for 300 yards and four scores and threw for 168 yards and three more scores.

“We figured some things out and I thought the kids did a good job,” LOLP head coach Trevor Carrier said. “They kept bringing warmth and we kept taking what they gave us. Cam is a super athlete and we have guys making plays for him. “This was a huge team effort.”

LOLP senior Ryder Stern caught a pair of TDs in the win and was also a force on defense due to his constant presence in the Jaguars backfield.

Stern got some help from defensive end Dylan Christianson, who played as a co-player in the LP program last year.

“Dylan is a great, physical player and has everything we need on the other end,” Stern said. “Last year we were playing basketball as rivals and we didn’t like each other. “We are now friends who play on the same team, go to the same place and realize a dream.”

Christianson never thought he’d have the chance to play in the state soccer tournament until LP teamed up with LO this fall. Now that he has the chance, no opponent will look back or waste time on the field.

“We weren’t looking beyond (the game) because we just wanted to win and we wanted to beat these guys,” Christianson said. “We weren’t given a chance to play last year because we were in the JV (LP) and now we’re going to US Bank Stadium. This is something special and we have a special group here. We immediately came together and these are my brothers now. “Cam and I became very close and Ryder and I got along well.”

The last time Christianson was at U.S. Bank Stadium, he was a little kid wearing a Russell Wilson jersey at a Vikings game. He will now appear on the field in his own jersey.

“It’s been a big dream of mine to play there ever since,” Christianson said.

The Cardinals (12-0 overall) will now face Fertile-Beltrami (11-0 overall) in a nine-man semifinal on Thursday at 4 p.m. at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

“It’s a quick turnaround,” Carrier said. “We’ll go back to the film room right away and make a plan.”

U.S. Bank Stadium may seem bigger than it is for some of the Cardinals, but Hungerholt, Stern and Carter Sweeney all had experience playing when LO won the state title in 2021.

“It’s a surreal feeling playing there and now I’m one of the key pieces and that makes it even crazier,” Stern said. “I’m excited to play there and show them what we’ve got.”
