EU to explore common interests with US under Trump administration

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the European Union will explore common interests with the United States under the new President Donald Trump.

EU leaders discussed how to cooperate with the incoming US administration at an informal meeting in the Hungarian capital Budapest on Thursday and Friday.

Von der Leyen held a press conference after the meeting. “The United States is our largest economic and commercial partner,” he said. “Therefore, it is important to establish good relations with the new administration from the very beginning.”

The EU and the former Trump administration had trade frictions by imposing high tariffs on each other’s steel and other products. Trump advocates the “America First” policy.

Von der Leyen said she spoke with Trump by phone on Thursday and discussed imports of liquefied natural gas from the United States, among other issues.

Von der Leyen said the EU still buys large amounts of LNG from Russia. He noted that the EU might consider replacing it with American LNG, which he said would be cheaper and reduce energy prices. He stated that discussions on the issue will continue.
