The South Dakota State women beat No. 21 Creighton 76-71 to spoil the Bluejays’ season opener.

BROOKINGS, SD (AP) — Brooklyn Meyer scored 17 points, Madison Mathiowetz added 13 and South Dakota State spoiled the Bluejays’ season opener by beating No. 21 Creighton 76-71 on Friday night.

South Dakota State scored the first seven points of the game before Creighton took a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bluejays maintained their lead throughout the entire second quarter and took a 31-28 advantage at halftime.

South Dakota State took a good lead midway through the third quarter when Meyer scored seven consecutive points on an 11-0 run to make it 47-39.

Haleigh Timmer opened the fourth by scoring eight points in South Dakota State’s 12-2 run. Molly Mogensen scored 10 consecutive Bluejay points in the final three minutes to rally Creighton. However, South Dakota State managed to stay ahead by at least five points by making 4 of 6 free throws in the final 90 seconds.

Timmer finished the game with 12 points, Mesa Byom had 11 points and 9 rebounds, and Paige Meyer had 10 points for South Dakota State, which was on the program’s 12th trip to the NCAA Tournament (2-0). The Jackrabbits were picked to top the Summit League in the pre-season poll and Brooklyn Meyer was named pre-season player of the year.

Lauren Jensen led Creighton (0-1) with 23 points. Mogensen scored 13 points and 9 rebounds, Kiani Lockett scored 12 points and Morgan Maly scored 11 points.

This was the Jacks’ home opener at the newly renovated First Bank & Trust Arena.
