Eagles Coach Says Jalen ‘Suffering from Dealing with Ankle’ Despite Rest Name

PHILADELPHIA – Ankle gate came up when Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was asked about Jalen Hurts’ status at the NovaCare Complex on Friday morning.

The quarterback did not participate in the portion of Wednesday’s practice that was open to reporters, and it was speculated that the reason for Hurts’ level of participation was limited to “rest.”

At a press conference Friday morning, Sirianni said the QB was dealing with an ankle issue.

“He was on the injury report for his ankle,” Sirianni said. “I’m just making sure we’re being cautious about everything.”

After practice Wednesday, Hurts was asked about his decision to cut back, which was unusual for him.

“I just do what I’m told,” Hurts said. “… We’re just trying to take it day by day, take it each day as it comes.”

After Sirianni was informed that the injury report cited “rest” as the reason for Hurts’ limited participation on Wednesday, the coach reversed course.

“It was a rest, yes. Sorry, I thought you were talking about something else,” Sirianni said.

The only players on the Eagles’ injury report dealing with ankle injuries are right guard Mekhi Becton and wing Ainias Smith. As for the other Jalen on the team (defensive back Jalen Carter), he was also not on the participation report this week, and the last time Carter was on his participation report it was a shoulder issue.

At Friday’s practice, Hurts was warming up behind large speakers that blocked the view of reporters and television cameras.

After all, Hurts, like many NFL players this time of year, is dealing with soreness, in this case lower-body aches, but he will play Sunday in Dallas.

The Eagles actually draw a line here, claiming that ankle soreness wasn’t the reason Hurts was minimized, but that starting center Cam Jurgens had arthritis due to an ankle injury.

Hurts has never been given a rest title before in his career with the Eagles, and other factors are at play, such as a quick return following Sunday’s game when the Eagles host league-leading Washington on Thursday, Nov. 14.

Hurts has a history of not wanting to warn opponents of any potential problems before games, and last season he wasn’t even listed on the injury report while dealing with a knee injury.

The difference is that Hurts is making this tackle to practice and doesn’t have to be on any injury reports if he participates in anything the players are competing in.
