Almost a month ago Hurricane Milton hits Florida’s Gulf Coast and devastated areas of the state. The damage to Milton was not the first of the season, although just a few weeks earlier Hurricane Helene had devastated much of the southeast.

Many of the victims brought to Florida by Hurricanes Helene and Milton are still at the beginning of a long road to recovery.

If you are still recovering from Hurricanes Helene or Milton and need help purchasing food, the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) can help you through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

on October 23 Florida’s DCF announced: “Florida’s Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) application has been approved.”

Here’s what you need to know about who is eligible for D-SNAP in Florida, what the program is, and how to apply.

Yes, the Florida Department of Children and Families was approved last week to receive D-SNAP benefits for disaster victims in the state, which went into effect on October 28th.

Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as D-SNAP Food assistance to low-income households with food loss or damage caused by a natural disaster DisasterAssistance.gov.

“D-SNAP provides food assistance to individuals and families impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton who do not receive food assistance through the regular Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP),” DCF’s announcement said.

“D-SNAP will be implemented by the Ministry gradually and on a district basis, starting from Monday, October 28, 2024.”

The first phase of registration is already over and the second phase will end today, November 8, Frida. The third phase of telephone and online registration will begin next week on Monday, November 11.

What can I buy with D-SNAP in Florida?

If you receive D-SNAP, you will receive an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card in the mail. You can use it to buy food, but not alcohol, tobacco products, or non-food items.

Who is eligible for emergency food stamps for disaster victims in Florida?

According to DCF, the eligibility requirements are:

  • You cannot receive regular food assistance through SNAP anyway.
  • You must live in a county that declared a disaster during Hurricane Helene and/or Milton.
  • Applicants must have experienced a disaster-related loss such as:
    • Damage to their home or freelance property
    • food loss
    • Reduction or loss of income
    • Other disaster-related expenses
  • Applicants must meet financial eligibility requirements (These requirements depend on several variables, including the size of your household)

How do I apply for D-SNAP in Florida?

People applying for D-SNAP must pre-register. Registration is done in phases determined by the district. You cannot pre-register before the dates determined according to your district. Today, Friday, November 8, is the last day to register for the second stage, and the third stage will start on Monday, November 11.

If you cannot pre-register online, D-SNAP locations will be announced as they open. According to DCF’s website.

Here’s what you need to know about pre-registering for D-SNAP benefits, according to DCF:

  • Verification is required for certain elements of the application.
  • Eligibility can be determined more quickly and easily if a state driver’s license or identification number and Social Security number are provided.
  • Pre-registration will be opened only for certain districts according to the calendar.
  • Residents who are unable to pre-register online may visit one of the D-SNAP event locations in person when they are open.
  • When selecting the disaster on the pre-registration form, select the most recent storm that affected your home.

The next step is an interview by calling the D-SNAP Call Center or attending an on-site event at a later date. Locations and dates of on-site events are announced upon opening.

Here’s what you need to know now:

  • Applicants may call only on the dates and working hours specified for their district.
  • Phone call times are determined by the first letter of your surname.
  • D-SNAP Call Center: 888-348-0408, Hours of Operation: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time.
  • Applicants must report the household’s net income from September 23, 2024 through October 22, 2024.
  • Applicants must report all liquid household assets available on September 23, 2024, including cash on hand and money in checking and savings accounts.

Can I still apply for D-SNAP in Florida? Here are the dates of the remaining eligible districts

DCF said it will begin Phase One by offering a phone option “to provide the fastest service to households eligible for government assistance.”

The department will also host in-person D-SNAP events for residents who are unable to attend by phone or online. Locations of in-person D-SNAP events will be announced as they open.
