Wolves news: Opinion – Gary O’Neil’s side ‘should not be in this position’ – Fan answers questions

Here’s what our Wolves fan writer Dave Azzopardi had to say in response to questions from our Southampton contributor Glen de la Cour:

Is there a feeling among the Wolves fanbase that Gary O’Neil truly has a last-ditch chance with this game? to have To win it? Looking at recent form, do you expect to win?

Yeah, there’s definitely a feeling among the majority of the fanbase that this is a must-win for O’Neil.

There have been some positive elements in our matches recently and that gives us some encouragement ahead of Saturday. But one win in 20 games, including last season, is not good enough and it is no surprise that some Wolves fans are not particularly looking forward to this game.

Your fixtures with the big clubs seem to be highlighted rather unceremoniously. Do you expect the team and the manager to climb the table as we get closer to Christmas and the fixture list on paper becomes a little gentler?

I certainly hope so. This team is good enough to compete with most teams in the league and we shouldn’t be in this position despite the tough fixtures.

Our fixtures are certainly more positive towards Christmas but it will be interesting to see if Wolves can find those wins and add some momentum to this run.

I believe we are strong enough and hopefully we will be much higher in the rankings by Christmas.

Is Wolves’ poor defensive record due to poor organization and tactical set-up, or poor individual defending by some players?

It’s a little bit of everything. We are in good form going forward and have scored a decent number of goals but as you know we have a very poor defensive record so far.

Regularly compromising set pieces is a slight concern. We even sacked our new set piece coach last month but things don’t seem to have improved much in that regard.

Occasionally we concede a goal where I think: “Fair play, that’s a really good goal.” This normally results from our own mistakes, whether it’s giving the ball away to the opponent or poor defensive positioning.

This will need to be addressed urgently if O’Neil keeps his job through this weekend.
