Car fire and explosion damaged 6 homes in South Ozone Park in Queens

SOUTHERN OZONE PARK, Queens (WABC) — A car explosion sent flying debris damaging nearby homes and shaking the neighborhood of South Ozone Park in Queens.

The vehicle burst into flames on 133rd Street just before 7 a.m. Friday.

Firefighters received numerous calls from concerned residents about explosions being heard on their block.

Leaking gas tanks may have caused the explosion in the vehicle. It was left on the street and parked overnight.

The vehicle belongs to a plumber who keeps natural gas and acetylene tanks on board.

When the owner went to start the car, presumably by remote control, the car exploded.

Investigators are investigating whether the tanks were improperly sealed, causing gas to accumulate in the car.

At least six homes and three cars were damaged by flying debris.

No one was injured. Investigators interviewed the owner of the vehicle.

The NYPD Bomb Squad was also called to examine the car.
