A police watchdog has launched an investigation after a woman died in custody in Nottingham.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said the 34-year-old woman was found unresponsive in a cell at around 22:30 GMT on 31 October.

The suspect, who was arrested the previous day, was arrested on charges of “shop theft” and sent to the courthouse.

The IOPC said “life-saving attempts” were made but the woman was pronounced dead at 11.12pm, prompting a mandatory referral from Nottinghamshire Police.

The observer said that the police’s contact with the woman before her death was being investigated.

IOPC regional director Derrick Campbell said: “Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and loved ones, as well as everyone affected by her death.

“As he was in police custody when he became ill, we need to conduct an investigation into the situation and this will include looking at the actions and decisions of the police officers and staff involved.

“We will keep the woman’s family and Nottinghamshire Police informed of our progress.”
