Kenosha school district says potential school shootings were prevented by staff; young man arrested

A suspect was taken into custody Thursday after police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, said a teenager tried to break into an area elementary school while potentially armed.

According to authorities, a person attempted to enter Roosevelt Elementary School in Kenosha with “suspicious bags.” Authorities said that the person who encountered school staff at the entrance of the building ran away from the school to a nearby neighborhood.

The school was suspended “for a safe period of time” and just after 2pm on Thursday authorities said a 13-year-old boy had been arrested.

Although they could not confirm whether the teenager had a gun on him at the time of the shooting, they said they believed there were firearms in the bag he was carrying.

“We believe he was in fact an armed suspect carrying a firearm and there was no legitimate reason to enter the school,” Kenosha Police Chief Patrick Patton said at a news conference following the arrest.

Authorities said there was evidence that police shared a video showing the teen practicing “primitive techniques” with a rifle and conducted multiple internet searches about school shootings.

According to the NBC affiliate, Kenosha Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Jeff Weiss said at the press conference: “Today we experienced something that all school staff and families feared; a potential school shooting.” TMJ4. “Today we give thanks.”

Weiss said the “safety work” done by the school before the incident “prevented further tragedies.”

Authorities urged parents to talk to their children and “if you see something, say so.”
