2 arrested at Chicago Loop Synagogue protest after demonstrators registered under fake names

CHICAGO (Wales) — Two protesters who used fake names to register for a special event were arrested and charged with misdemeanors, Chicago police said.

The event, organized by the Jewish Alliance of Chicago and featuring Yoseph Haddad, a prominent Israeli Arab known to be a defender of Israel and who was injured while serving in the Israel Defense Forces, a task that Arab citizens of Israel are not required to do, was targeted. There were protests by several groups, including Students for Justice in Palestine and the US Palestine Community Network, head of the Chicago Loop Synagogue.

Chairman Lee Zoldan said the event required an RSVP and more than 200 attendees were pre-screened by the Israeli Consulate, but several people registered under fake names, and Zoldan believed they revealed the time and location of the event to protesters.

Zoldan said about a half hour before the event started, about 30 people arrived at the synagogue, some carrying Students for Justice in Palestine banners. They were joined by other protesters, including members of the US Palestine Community Network and attorneys from the National Lawyers Guild.

As the protest continued outside, two people attending the event began yelling in the sanctuary, Zoldan said. The police were called.

Chicago police said a 19-year-old man was charged with one count of misdemeanor trespass, while a 20-year-old was charged with one count of criminal trespass and one count of criminal damage to property, both misdemeanors.
