As Washington prepares for Trump’s second term as president, travelers may be wondering what will happen to these recently enacted regulations. While it’s true that Republican administrations have generally favored fewer rules for companies, experts say there’s no guarantee the Trump administration will ease those policies, to which Americans across the political spectrum have responded positively. Even if the new DOT secretary wants to get rid of them, doing so may not be easy in many cases.

“There’s a big difference between fighting for a new rule and trying to overturn an existing rule. I would caution anyone considering overturning the new automatic refund rule,” said William J. McGee, Senior Specialist for Aviation and Travel. The American Economic Liberties Project told USA TODAY in an interview. “There may be a perception that once some of these rules are enacted, we can undo it with the flick of a pen, but it’s not that simple, especially if it’s been enacted by Congress.”
