RALEIGH, N.C. — Two people were taken into custody Thursday as part of an investigation into this week’s shootings at eight vehicles and several homes in the Raleigh area, injuring one person, the city’s police chief said.

According to Raleigh police, multiple people reported hearing gunshots along a portion of Interstate 40 in Raleigh and Cary during morning rush hour Wednesday.

There have been a total of 12 shootings in southwestern Wake County since Monday that authorities believe are related, Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson said at a news conference Thursday. Officials said eight vehicles were hit, two on Monday, four on Wednesday and two on Thursday. Four other attacks on Wednesday also hit residences, police said in a press release.

Patterson did not discuss possible charges or provide the names of those detained. Police officials said that one of them was considered suspicious, while the other was connected to the house where the person was located.

“We will continue to follow this lead and any other leads we have,” Patterson said.

WRAL-TV reported that two dozen law enforcement officers approached a Raleigh home with guns in hand and took two men out in handcuffs.

Of the 12 reported shootings, one person was injured, he said. A woman traveling on I-40 was shot in the leg early Monday morning, police said.

Police said they do not believe the shootings were a road rage incident. Authorities said the attacker is suspected of using a gun. Details about whether the suspect was on foot or in a vehicle at the time of the shooting are being investigated.
