Cause of house explosion in Southern Jordan revealed

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — A full day after a long day Explosion at house in southern Jordan kills 15-year-old boy and forces nearby evacuationsThe severity of what’s happening in their backyard is starting to affect the neighbors, too.

“It’s terrible devastation,” said neighbor Carol Lee Doramus, who lives a few blocks from the house.

Doramus said he heard a loud explosion and couldn’t imagine what it was until his daughter told him what had happened.

“The thing that affects you… you don’t have any at home,” he added. “And I looked in there and it looked like a refrigerator on the pile. And I can’t imagine losing everything I had, my kids’ pictures and that kind of thing.”

The 15-year-old boy who died in the explosion Wednesday was identified as a Bingham High School student. Out of respect for the family, his name was not disclosed.

In an update made by South Jordan Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Lessner, the cause of the fire and explosion was determined to be a gas leak.

The source of the gas leak is being investigated.

Neighbors gathered around the boy’s family and tied blue ribbons to the fence in front of where the house once stood.

“I couldn’t have imagined this,” neighbor David Llewellyn said. “My heart, our hearts, my wife and I are going to our family.”

The family requested privacy after the incident, Mayor Dawn Ramsey said in a message from the city.

“Our community suffered an unimaginable tragedy yesterday when one of our residents passed away when their family home exploded,” Ramsey wrote. “Our hearts break as we grieve with our family, friends, neighbors and everyone else who is grieving during this time.” It’s a devastating time.”

Heartbroken by what happened, residents of the South Jordan neighborhood like Doramus believe they will get through this week’s tragedy together.

“We have the greatest neighborhood I’ve ever lived in and I’ve been here a long time… people come and go but we’re always here to help.”
