Kyle Shanahan said Thursday: KNBR’s “Tolbert & Copes” 49ers All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey is projected to make his debut of the 2024 NFL season on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium.

“One way or another, I feel good. It’s been two good days,” Shanahan said. “I’m just messing around but he’s been fantastic the last two days and hopefully that continues to go well. I’m hoping to get him out there.”

“You never know if something is going to happen or something, but these two days have been great and I expect to see him there.”

McCaffrey missed all of San Francisco’s first eight games while recovering from Achilles tendonitis in both legs. He traveled abroad in late September to receive treatment on both Achilles tendons before being placed on a conservative program to improve his fitness.

The 49ers, who had no problems with their physical therapy last month, opened the practice window for McCaffrey and designated him to come off the injured reserve list.

This week he trained for the first time since September 12 and on and off field energy It was impressive.

Shanahan, a bit shaken heading into Week 9’s bye week, hoped the extended break would give his guys some time to heal and rest. And it looks like the break was exactly what they needed, with the Offensive Player of the Year poised to make a comeback.
