Forest Lawn will paint tributes to veterans on sidewalks in east Calgary

A group of local community organizers is looking for volunteers to help organize a last-minute memorial service for Canadian veterans.

The Forest Lawn Community Association and Homes for Heroes teamed up last week to introduce the city to the idea of painting a crosswalk to honor veterans.

“This means a lot,” said Gar Gar, president of the community association, “because in many cases veterans’ voices are not heard. And this is basically an opportunity to say that your voice is heard and your voice matters, and we hope that we look forward to that.”

Ont. Other Canadian municipalities, including Stoney Creek, have introduced pedestrian crossings for veterans. (Hamilton) and Windsor, Chatham-Kent, where the crosswalk was welcomed with open arms by local veterans.

“This is shaping up to be quite a memorable Remembrance Day,” said senior Len Maynard, who also serves as president of Chatham Branch 642 of the Royal Canadian Legion.

“This Week of Remembrance is very moving,” Maynard said in an interview with CTV News. “This should really make you understand what it’s all about as you walk down the street.”

On Thursday, Gar posted an update on Facebook.

“I am grateful and humbled to inform you that we have consulted with the City of Calgary, the Federation of Calgary Communities, Homes for Heroes and Everline Coatings and Service and are conducting the review,” he said.

“We are excited to announce that the initiative will be in two phases due to the safety of busy intersections and the short duration of time.”

He said the first phase will start on Friday.

“36 Street and 8 Ave. We got a green light/permit to paint/mold the sidewalks/pathway surrounding the SE (four sidewalks surrounding the crosswalk at this intersection).

“We now need volunteers to make this possible,” he said. “Anyone who might volunteer to help clean and paint four sidewalks starting at 11 a.m. Friday is asked to call 403-826-0731.”

Anyone who is available can meet at 11 a.m. at the intersection of 36 Street and 8 Avenue SE.
