Long Island rental homeowners sentenced to prison in fire that killed 2 sisters

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — The owners of a Long Island rental house were convicted Thursday in connection with: Fire that killed two sisters in 2022.

In August 2022, the Wiener family from Potomac, Maryland, rented a home on Noyac Bay from Peter and Pamela Miller of Sag Harbor for a week.

An intense fire broke out at 3 am on August 3, 2022. Parents Alisa and Lewis Wiener were burned and barely escaped the terrible inferno. His son, Zachary Wiener, jumped from the second floor to escape the flames.

Daughters Jillian and Lindsay Wiener were trapped in the fire and died.

The fire started in an outdoor kitchen the Millers built themselves without permission or electrical supervision, and the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors were not properly wired and there were no backup batteries.

Homeowners in deadly fire sentenced to probation and community service

More than two dozen grieving relatives and friends of the Wiener family traveled to Long Island from multiple states Thursday to hear the sentencing for the Millers.

“This was the most difficult case this court has ever seen. This case was gutted because of the raw emotions of the Wiener family and certainly the Miller family,” said defense attorney Ed Burke Jr..

Peter Miller pleaded guilty to negligent homicide and was sentenced to three years probation and 200 hours of community service.

Pamela Miller pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment and was sentenced to 100 hours of community service.

He both cried and apologized in court.

“The violations of town laws and what happened here in criminal court have been lesson after lesson for the Millers and their homeowners,” Burke said.

Making emotional statements, the Wieners said that no punishment could suit the crime.

Jillian Wiener was a student at the University of Michigan and Lindsay Wiener attended Tulane University in Louisiana. Their schools called them bright, artistic and dedicated volunteers.

Unfortunately, after the fire, father Lewis Wiener died of pancreatic cancer, leaving only the mother and son. They told the judge they wanted to be defined by love and strength, not tragedy.
