Dementia summit in South Bend presents a variety of dementia care topics

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – A two-day summit in South Bend was devoted to innovations in the care of people with dementia.

Nearly 300 caregivers from across the Midwest attended the two-day meeting, which ended Thursday at the Ribbon Town Event Center.

Topics ranged from the use of rhythmic drumming to reducing stress and anxiety.

It also included the use of less institutional housing models for people with dementia.

“People with dementia can do so much more, but we’re trying to keep them safe in a locked unit. When I say locked units are unsafe because people don’t walk enough, they don’t exercise enough, they don’t socialize enough, I say you have to unlock them and look at safety and risks from a different perspective,” he said. assisted living facility. “All people with dementia will die within a few years, so the question is how you want to live in the last years of your life.”

A VIP party was also held at Milton Village, a South Bend facility that uses the Dementia Village concept.
