Black Country men are among seven men jailed for almost 40 years after a huge fight broke out in a hotel. Kabaddi tournament in Derby.

He was also seen moving towards the fence between two fields; police later found a shoulder bag in the area where a loaded semi-automatic handgun was found.

His DNA was found on both the gun and the bag. During the fight, a bullet hit his groin and the bullet had to be removed during surgery at the hospital.

Karamjit SinghDerby, 36, admitted possession of a bladed object and committing a violent disorder and was caged for four-and-a-half years.

Baljit SinghThe 33-year-old from Wolverhampton pleaded guilty to the same charges and was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.

Hardev UppalTipton, 34, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and injure. He was sentenced to ten years and ten months in prison.

Jagjit SinghThe 31-year-old from Wolverhampton admitted possessing a firearm with intent to create fear of violence and was caged for four-and-a-half years.

Doodhnath TripathiThe 30-year-old man, from Hounslow, London, pleaded guilty to violent disorder and wounding and was sentenced to five years and ten months in prison.

‘These men attended this event specifically to cause trouble’

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Croome, of Derbyshire Police, said: “This was supposed to be a fun family day out at a sporting event but it turned into a major incident of violence which left multiple people injured and many people fearing for their safety.

“These men attended this event with the intention of causing trouble by pre-planning their attacks and being armed with weapons.

“Their actions and the level of violence seen that day were disgusting. For many who attended the event in good faith, this was a very frightening and distressing scene and we are grateful to them and the wider community for their assistance throughout our investigation.

“We know this investigation has had a huge impact on people and I would like to thank everyone who helped us bring these seven men to justice and all the officers involved in a long and very complex investigation. ”

‘A blatant disregard for the safety of others’

Detective Constable Stevie Barker, who is investigating, added: “These men showed a blatant disregard for the safety of others during what was intended to be a fun sports tournament but ended in mindless violence caused by these two groups.

“His actions that day left many people physically injured and also had a mental and emotional impact on the hundreds of spectators who were there to enjoy the Kabaddi tournament with their friends and family.

“The subsequent investigation into this disorder was very complex and wide-ranging, involving hundreds of police officers not only from Derbyshire but across the country, and I would like to thank them for their assistance.

“I am also very grateful to the local community for their support in the days and weeks following this incident as I know it has had a significant impact on them.”
