Singer Jada Arnell Thomas, 26, was shot in the chest while signing autographs after a performance at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters in Downtown Dallas on Saturday evening.

Police said the gunman, 26-year-old Micah Williams, was just feet away from Thomas at the signing.

There were nearly 200 people in the concert hall. Multiple witnesses told police they saw Williams shoot Thomas and then run away.

Curtis King, founder of the Black Academy of Arts & Letters, followed Williams on foot to the Thompson Hotel near Akard.

“I went into an emotional state of rage where everything became blurry and fuzzy,” he recalled. “I walked out the door and said, ‘Where did the woman go?’ “They pointed in the direction he was going, I saw him through the glass doors and started running after him.”

Officers arrested Williams in the hotel lobby. Police said a gun was found inside her purse.

Dallas County Jail mugshot – Micah Williams

According to an arrest warrant obtained by FOX 4, Williams confessed to the shooting.

Williams also alleged that the victim harassed him last year. However, FOX 4 could not confirm this claim.

Investigators are unable to interview the victim because he is still in the hospital.

King said he recognized Williams more than a decade ago when he saw his mug, but he is still waiting for investigators to explain the motive.

“They said, ‘Mr. King, he performed here at the Black Academy.’ He was in the summer program 10-12 years ago,” he said. “I won’t let people walk in fear and come to a place I enjoy.”

King says he increased security by adding metal detectors and only having a single entrance.

Williams faced a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was booked into the Dallas County Jail.

Thomas remains in the hospital. He could barely communicate after recovering from surgery Monday evening. For now, he can only communicate by writing on a piece of paper, but his recovery is progressing.

Shows originally scheduled for Monday were cancelled.

The cause of the attack is being investigated.
