The first baby was born at a new hospital in Smethwick.

Mona Lisa Yonas arrived at Midland Metropolitan University Hospital at 08:48 GMT on Wednesday.

Perry Barr’s parents, Semhar Tesfu and Yonas Kflu, said they had an emotional day and were very happy that their daughter was born in the new hospital.

The facility opened following the closure of the maternity department at City Hospital Birmingham and the transfer of maternity services.

“We really appreciate the amazing work the midwives do and want to thank everyone who helped our baby be born safely,” the couple said.

Emily, the midwife who gave birth to Mona Lisa, said it was an exciting day she will remember for the rest of her career.

Women in labor and those needing urgent care should now go to the new Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, hospital bosses have said.

Some outpatient appointments, including scans and scheduled appointments with consultants, will also be held at the new hospital.

Meanwhile, the antenatal clinic at the former Sandwell Hospital on Hallam Street will remain open, along with community venues such as Aston Pride Community Health Centre, they said.

The neonatal department was also transferred to the new hospital, carrying 12 babies, the youngest of whom was only two days old.
