While not a hot ticket for moviegoers (it grossed less than $5 million at the worldwide box office), the sci-fi film was well received by critics (“Certified Fresh” Rotten Tomatoes) and viewers (75% positive rating on RT). I remember being absolutely blown away when I first watched it on-demand around the time it was released. Based on short story You are all zombies Written by Robert A. Heinlein and written and directed by Michael and Peter Spierig, predetermination It follows an Interim Bureau agent (Ethan Hawke) trying to stop a terrorist known as the Fizzle Bomber. This takes her to a bar in New York in 1970, where she meets John (Sarah Snook), who tells the agent her whole story: how she was born a girl, how she fell in love with a mysterious man who abandoned her, how she got pregnant. Meanwhile, the doctor learned that she was intersex and performed a hysterectomy, while the baby was also kidnapped. The agent then offers to help John find answers about his past, which will aid his own mission.

If the plot description alone sounds crazy, you’re not wrong. predetermination It’s a wild ride with many twists and turns that I had to think about for a while before fully grasping it. But still, the complexities didn’t stop me from enjoying the film, and frankly, others felt the same, as evidenced by the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score.

One of its strongest elements are the two main performances by Hawke and Snook. Hawke is always a reliable actor, and this role gave him the opportunity to explore some complex ideas, resulting in one of the more unique and interesting performances. But Snook became the star of the show four years before she truly broke out in her Emmy-winning role. Inheritance. Snook plays John and Jane (their identities before the hysterectomy), but her performance as John is incredible and almost unrecognizable.
