A bus driver of the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) died of a heart attack while driving in the city on Wednesday.

The incident took place around 11 am while the bus was traveling from Nelamangala to Dasanapura.

CCTV footage circulating on social media shows the moment 40-year-old driver Kiran Kumar suddenly collapsed from a heart attack. When it separates from the steering and collapses onto its side, the bus continues on its way without a driver and eventually collides with another BMTC bus in front.

Conductor Obalesh quickly jumped into the driver’s seat, regained control of the steering wheel and stopped the bus.

After stopping the bus, Obalesh took Kumar to a nearby hospital, but doctors confirmed that Kumar had already died of a heart attack.

BMTC officials also confirmed that Kumar suffered a heart attack while on duty and was driving vehicle number KA 57 F-4007 on route 256 M/1 on his last journey of the day.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the untimely demise of Depot 40 driver Kiran Kumar, who passed away due to a sudden heart attack on November 6. Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) extends its deepest condolences to the family. Kiran Kumar,” BMTC said in a statement.

The statement also noted: “The company prays for the peace of his soul. Senior officials of BMTC visited the family and expressed their condolences and made a blessing to assist in the final rites.”
