Veterans Day is coming early to the Tuscaloosa VA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – A special Early Veterans Day parade for male and female veterans at the Tuscaloosa VA.

Monday, November 11 marks Veterans Day, which honors veterans of the United States Armed Forces.

The idea behind the parade was to take the parade to veterans since most of them were not well enough to go to the Veterans Day parade elsewhere in town.

Navy veteran Doug Null and his wife, Alma, heard about the Veterans Day parade at the Tuscaloosa VA and knew they wanted to be front and center there.

“It was very thoughtful of them to get this since they couldn’t go out,” senior Null said.

The main road in front of the Tuscaloosa VA became the ‘main attraction’ for dozens of people, including VA employees.

“We respect and thank our veterans. It’s pretty amazing. “We’re a little nervous for our first time, but it feels pretty amazing,” said VA Recreation Therapist Kelan Roseman.

High school marching bands, first responders and VA workers formed the cortege that traveled nearly a mile across campus.

Karen Underwood runs the child care center here on the VA campus, and she knew little ones would never turn down the chance to watch the parade.

“It’s very important for kids on campus to be able to enjoy it, appreciate it and know what veterans are all about,” Underwood said.

Veterans like Doug Null, who left the Navy long ago but feels America’s warm embrace today.

“It was great. They really put a lot of thought into what they were doing and appreciated everything that happened here,” Null said.

Tuscaloosa VA leaders say a lot of planning has gone into this and they plan to make it an annual event on campus.
