VAN BUREN, MO. (KFVS) – Leaders in Van Buren are cautiously optimistic about the Current River crest forecast.

According to Van Buren Fire Chief Curt Majors, as of 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6, the Current River is expected to reach 24.5 feet by 6 p.m.

This is considered moderate flood stage.

The Current River was initially predicted to reach a height of 30 feet.

Chief Experts stated in a Facebook post He said the falling crest forecast was “great news” but still placed the river at the sixth-highest crest.

He urges those who leave their homes to wait a few hours before returning to be 100 percent sure of their new crest information.

Earlier Tuesday, Majors said people living along the Current River or its tributaries should evacuate.

Also Tuesday, volunteers helped fill sandbags in Van Buren.

Volunteers are asked to bring a shovel and gloves to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office or the corner of Broadway and College in Van Buren.

Van Buren R-1 Schools canceled classes Wednesday.

The Van Buren Youth and Community Center opened at 5 p.m. Tuesday for anyone needing a place to spend the night.
