PL rivals to seek £100m+ ‘damages’ with guilty verdict after ‘lawyer advice’ emerges

Rival Premier League clubs will seek ‘damages’ if Manchester City are found guilty of breaching Financial Fair Play rules, according to reports.

Man City They face more than 100 charges after being accused of breaching the Premier League’s FFP rules. They were referred to an independent commission following a four-year investigation into their conduct between 2009 and 2018.

The Premier League team was sued at the start of 2023, and it has already dragged on longer than most would have liked.

City insisted on their innocence and fought back against the Premier League. Earlier this year, they launched an unprecedented legal battle as they campaigned for the repeal of Related Party Transactions (APT) rules.

This separate case had the potential to significantly alter the FFP hearing and was concluded in early October. Manchester City reportedly failed to secure a landslide victory. but they are said to have “won on penalties” against the Premier League.

Even though the APT hearing has already concluded, FFP trial is ongoing and expected to last until early 2025.

If Pep GuardiolaIf their side is found guilty, they could face huge fines, a transfer ban, points deduction or expulsion from the Premier League.

The report explains.

‘A number of Premier League clubs have reserved the right to seek compensation against Manchester City for 115 of the club’s alleged rule breaches ahead of deadline day on Tuesday.

‘The case was recommended by lawyers even before the outcome of the case, as there was a potential six-year statute of limitations extending back to 5 November 2018, when a German website first published the Football Leaks documents.

If serious allegations against ‘City’ are proven, clubs could claim loss of income for missing out on league titles or European competition for several seasons, which could cost hundreds of millions of pounds in total.

‘Clubs cannot sue each other through the courts under Premier League rules, but can do so through arbitration under Rule X.

‘Lawyers are understood to have advised clubs that any compensation claims would risk being time-barred if they waited for the outcome of the hearing into the 115 alleged rule breaches.

‘The Limitations Act 1980 sets a six-year limitation period for legal claims for breach of contract in the UK but allows an exception where that breach has been concealed.’
