Wayanad saved the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi from embarrassment in 2019 when voters exercised their right to vote overwhelmingly in favor of the Congress leader in the Lok Sabha elections (he lost his family district of Amethi) and ensured his retention in Parliament. He won again from the constituency in 2024 and also from his mother’s old constituency, Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh, but decided to retain Rae Bareli and vacated the seat. Now her sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is contesting the election, which is her first try with electoral politics.
