Atkins said: “I am opposed to these boils being dumped on our undeveloped coastlines, particularly in my constituency of Louth and Horncastle, and this has a real life impact on people in the Alford area and also on the coastline.”

He said the government’s six-year deadline to build the poles was “completely unrealistic”.

Atkins added: “We are discussing whether we need to build a second network offshore or look at underground options to get the supply to the south of England where it needs to be.

“They’ve done this elsewhere in the UK, so my question to the government is why are they treating Lincolnshire differently? Why should we expect to be treated any differently than the good residents of Scotland or Yorkshire?”

In April, the energy provider announced plans for two cables to travel 400 miles (644 km) across the North Sea floor from Scotland to England, coming ashore at Anderby Creek.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has previously said that without electricity pylons the government would “never deliver clean energy to the British people”.

It was also stated that there was “additional grid capacity that could be used to connect new renewable projects in the Lincolnshire area”.
