A 14-year-old boy fatally shot a 13-year-old boy during an accident at an unoccupied Minneapolis home early Tuesday, authorities said.

According to a statement from police, the “apparently accidental” gunshots occurred around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of N. 24th and Sheridan streets in the 2400 block of N. Ferrant Place.

Officers arrived at the scene and found the 13-year-old boy had been shot once and immediately provided aid to the teen before he died at the scene, police said.

The police statement continued: “Initial information indicates that a 14-year-old boy was using a gun when the 13-year-old boy was shot.” Police did not disclose the identities of the young people.

The 14-year-old boy remained at the scene and was arrested and transported to the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Center.

Police said two adult women and other children were in the home at the time of the shooting.

“The death of a child is always incredibly disturbing and tragic,” said Police Chief Brian O’Hara. “Our investigators will work diligently to answer the many questions we have. In addition to supporting the families affected by this tragedy, everyone must make every effort to ensure that every gun is stored safely.”
