A man has been sentenced to more than 33 years in prison for the murder he committed outside a Wright County business where the gunman, his wife and the victim worked.

Kevin Uriel Zelaya Asencio, 24, of Glencoe, Minn., was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to second-degree premeditated murder and second-degree assault in connection with the March 2023 shooting of Adrian Montano Medina in the Dura Supreme cabinet parking lot. manufacturing company in Howard Lake.

Zelaya Asencio, who has remained in prison since his arrest, is expected to serve the first 21 years of his 33-year prison sentence and the remainder on supervised release.

The County Attorney’s Office said the criminal complaint was based on witnesses and interviews with Zelaya Asencio, as well as physical evidence and surveillance videos.

Multiple calls to 911 reported the shooting, including a woman screaming. One of the callers gave law enforcement the license plate of a pickup truck that Zelaya Asencio pulled from the parking lot.

Police arrived and found Medina in the driver’s seat of a pickup truck with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

Minutes later, a sheriff’s deputy noticed Zelaya Asencio’s pickup truck driving on Hwy. 12. Zelaya Asencio was arrested in Waverly and deputies found an AR-15 assault-style rifle in the pickup.
