REMERTON, Ga. (AP) — Two people were killed and a police officer was injured in a weekend shooting in Georgia’s Lowndes County.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that it is investigating the shooting in the popular destination Remerton. Valdosta State University students’ survival.

According to preliminary information, the shooting occurred at around 01.30 on Friday, November 1, after two people argued in front of a bar. Four sheriff’s deputies were working off-duty work outside various bars in the area when the shots rang out.

Immediately after that incident, someone fired more shots, prompting two more deputies to fire back, the GBI said. A deputy was hit in the second shooting and taken to an area hospital. He is expected to survive, the GBI said. Two more people died in the shooting, the agency said.

Police seized weapons at both scenes, but it remained unclear how many shots were fired, who fired the fatal shots and whether there were any suspects.

Security in the area has been a major concern for residents; This was the second fatal shooting at the same location in a year. WALB-TV reported.

“I mean, I don’t even want to go to bars because I never know what’s going to happen,” one Remerton resident told the television station.

In 2023, 21-year-old Valdosta State University student Brianna Long was killed by a stray bullet while cleaning up at a bar in the area where the officer-involved shooting occurred during Halloween. Since his death, the Remerton Police Department has implemented additional surveillance measures with cameras and officers.
