Salem Hardees Restaurant closed due to electrical fire

Salem Hardee’s Restaurant at West Main and College is closed until repairs can be made following a fire just before noon Monday.

Salem Fire Chief Jim Cerny explains what happened.

“There is a roof leak that has leaked into some electrical components in the lower ceiling, causing them to short circuit and create smoke. We are shutting off the electricity and gas here. They will need to have the roof leak repaired and take care of the electrical issues.”

The initial call to 911 showed a wall was on fire. Cerny said the flames were out when they arrived and they quickly eliminated the problem while shutting off the power. It is not yet known how much damage there is to the electrical system.

The restaurant was evacuated by employees before emergency help arrived.

Odin firefighters provided mutual aid at the scene.
