The family of a man killed in a hit-and-run in Hamilton have thanked members of the public who came to his aid in an “unimaginably horrific and traumatic” incident.

James Craig died after being hit by a black Mercedes A-Class car on the A723 near Quarry Street at around 12.40pm on October 27.

After stopping to help the 70-year-old, he was assisted by a young man who performed CPR and staff at a nearby bar, his family said in a statement.

Police have tracked down the car involved and are carrying out “extensive” forensic examinations.

The force said officers were following a positive line of inquiry but urged anyone with information to come forward.

In a statement shared via Police Scotland, Mr Craig’s family said: “We have read all the heartfelt messages about James and are grateful for the warmth and kindness shared by everyone who knew him.

“I can’t tell you how much relief reading these has brought to all of us, thank you very much.

“We would also like to thank Police Scotland for their support and ongoing efforts throughout this time.

“We now know that a young man stopped and performed CPR to help our father. We would also like to thank the staff of a nearby bar who were there. We would like to take this moment to express our deepest gratitude to you.

“While this experience was unimaginably horrific and traumatic, it means so much to know that my father is not alone.

“Thank you for your kindness and courage.”

Officers are again appealing for anyone with information or who may have seen a black Mercedes A-Class car in the area to get in touch.

Sergeant John Houston said: “Our thoughts are with James’ family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

“Our questions remain and we are pursuing a positive line of investigation.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen a black Mercedes A Class and has not yet contacted the authorities.

“I would also appeal to anyone with dashcam or private CCTV who could help us get in touch.”
