Former Judiciary Secretary and his son’s bail request rejected in foreign exchange case

A Dhaka court today denied bail to former additional secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mohammad Amjad Hossain and his son KM Ashif Hossain, sending them both to jail in a case filed under the Foreign Exchange Control Act. , 1947.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman issued the order after Investigating Officer Md Sumon Miah, sub-inspector at Uttara West Police Station, presented the two men in the court and requested that they be kept in police custody until the investigation is concluded.

The defense requested bail, claiming that the case was filed with the aim of harassing the defendants. However, after hearing both sides, the judge rejected the petition and ordered their transfer to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.

The arrests followed a joint operation by the army and police at House 33 in Sector 11 in Uttara on Sunday night. According to the police, Tk 1.95 billion in cash, foreign currency, 11 iPhones and luxury watches were seized during the four-hour raid.

Amjad, who retired as additional secretary in 2020, is originally from Ghazipur. In light of the incident, the police registered a case against the Uttara West Police Station under the Foreign Exchange Control Act, 1947.
