In the locker room: Lions enjoy road win over Packers of Lambeau

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Detroit Lions have won three straight on the road against the Green Bay Packers for the first time since 1986, 1987 and 1988.

Unlike the last three-game road winning streak against the Packers, all three of those wins came from Lambeau Field in the national spotlight. In the previous three-game road winning streak against the Packers, the third and last of those wins came from Milwaukee County Stadium in 1988.

Kevin Zeitler, the team’s oldest player, was born in 1990. Offensive lineman Taylor Decker, the longest-tenured member of Detroit’s roster, was born in 1994.

Speaking of horror house, Lambeau Field has been around for this franchise for the last 30+ years. But this also represents another major milestone and bump to overcome on the Lions’ path to seeking more.

“First of all, it’s been a long time since this happened,” Decker said. “Again, it’s just a testament to the type of guys we have. We do not turn a blind eye to negativity. We do not turn a blind eye to difficulties. We found the right group of players, so big credit to Brad (Holmes) and Dan (Campbell) for bringing in the right type of players.

“Then the guys in the locker room won’t shy away from a big opportunity.”

Most importantly, the Lions are 2-0 in the NFC North in their quest to repeat as division champions. And they won both of those games on the road, knocking off the Vikings in Minnesota earlier this month, and now this.

St. Brown was also asked about that three-straight stretch on the road against the Packers. He said that although it was a “great” statistic to hear, they weren’t too worried about it because they still had to play them this season.

St. “We play them twice a year, so we’ll see them again in Detroit,” Brown said. “We know what happened last year. They came over at Thanksgiving and gave it to us. It’s nice to win here. But like I said, you’re going to see every division team twice a year.”

“Next time we play they will come ready. But for now, this win is big for us, where everything is (in the NFC North).”

See below for more from inside the locker room:

Lions head coach Dan Campbell on winning in these conditions: “Yes, every time you win, you learn from it and get better at winning. The hard thing about winning is that you learn the things you have to keep learning, but you can’t overlook the things you didn’t do well just because you won, you have to make sure we identify those things. We need to get clean because we will be exposed.

“There’s some stuff, there’s tape, there’s stuff we have to clean up in a hurry and we will, but I know this: I’m not surprised in the slightest that we came here and played pretty good football in the elements. We’re built for this guy and it doesn’t matter if we just play indoors. It doesn’t matter. Anything. We can play on the ground, we can play in the rain, we can play in the mud, that’s just us, man.

Campbell on Brian Branch’s firing: “Yes, look, you know as well as I do that it’s not up to me. The only comment I got was that these guys (referees) did a great job, Clete (Blakeman) and them. I have great respect for what they do, and they said it came from New York, so that’s all I got. It’s the first time I’ve been a part of something like this since I became head coach and someone got sent off. So I didn’t see it. I don’t know.

“So I would just tell him (Branch) to lower the price and he has to get used to that too when he’s playing prime time games. New York will look at all this. They don’t care about the games at one o’clock. They give us prime time games. So understand the situation and we will get through this. “It will be fine.”

Lions QB Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. On hitting Brown on 30 straight targets: “He’s the friendliest target I’ve ever thrown at and I’m lucky to be able to play with him. I hope to play with him for a long time. He is a very hardworking person. He’s doing everything right. I love it. “He’s amazing.”

Packers HC Matt LaFleur on the loss against the Lions: “First of all, give Detroit a ton of credit. They played a clean game. It’s much cleaner than what we did. I’m disappointed in the number of penalties we’ve received and the injuries we’ve inflicted on ourselves. You can’t do that against a really good football team. You look at the line-up, they score three points just before the two-minute period, then we choose six, then they come out and score in the second half. “That’s a lot to handle, and frankly we haven’t done a good enough job of handling it.”

LaFleur on Kerby Joseph’s six: “I’ve got to go check it out. I think he was trying to make a play. He was under pressure there. I think Josh (Jacobs) obviously saw Joseph pick on that. He’s one of the best guards in the league. I think both of those safeties are really good players. They’ve got great ball skills.” What do they have? It’s ten picks between them now, so you can’t do that against those guys. Joseph made a great play. That was a big play in the game.”

Packers QB Jordan Love on what he saw on the interception: “No, I didn’t see him (Joseph) when I threw it. “Like I said, I saw Josh (Jacobs) trying to get out of there and like I said, the ball didn’t go where I wanted it to go and yeah, it was a critical mistake.”

Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown on his victory lap around the stadium: “I can tell anybody that; I feel like we have the best fans in the world. They travel really well. You saw the blue shirts and the blue jerseys out there today. I mean, we love them. They were chanting “JA-RED GOFF” at the end of the game. Even on third downs, the Packers I felt like it was on offense; it was pretty loud for them.

“We love them. They are the best. And we are happy to continue working for them.

Perry Fewell, the NFL’s senior vice president of officiating, said of Branch’s dismissal: “It’s not automatic. We looked at all angles and clearly felt that there was time and space for him to make a different choice as his action was a clear foul. “And he clearly had the opportunity to avoid the head and neck area.”

Campbell on Goff’s hot play: “He’s playing at such a high level, I know it’s not the same, but we’re training outside. Thursday was windy like today. It didn’t rain, so we’ll be fine these two days just watching him in the elements, throwing it the way he does. We have full confidence in him and “This was good for us.”
