CHICAGO (Wales) — A Chicago firefighter was seriously injured in a fall on the city’s Northwest Side on Sunday.

Chicago Fire Department officials said the firefighter fell from the roof of a three-story building in the 800 block of Humboldt Park, North Hamlin, into the basement.

The injury occurred while CFD crews were responding to the fire just after 6 p.m.

The injured firefighter was taken to Stroger Hospital for serious injuries resulting from the fall.

The fire department said all residents were able to evacuate safely on their own before crews arrived.

Eight people living in the building were not injured but were displaced, CFD officials said. The Red Cross responded to help them.

Chicago fire officials said they were dealing with hoarding conditions on the second floor, meaning there were many things inside that made the fire worse.

Witness April Rimmer was down the street when the fire started and called 911.

“It was really crazy and everyone was screaming, ‘It’s a fire, it’s a fire,’ but no one pulled out their phone to call 911, so that was my first thought,” Rimmer said. “And I called 911 as soon as I could. It’s so sad… so sad.”

ABC7 was also told an Ecuadorian immigrant family lives in the building. They said they had been there for about six months and had lost everything.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
