Congratulations are in order for Kansas City Royals right-handed pitcher Seth Lugo, who won the American League Gold Glove Award on Sunday night.

With the win, he also made history for the Royals in a way that had not been done in the last 35 years.

According to Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

Seth Lugo became the 2nd Royals pitcher to win a Gold Glove, after Bret Saberhagen (1989).

The Gold Glove Award caps off Lugo’s incredible first season in Kansas City. After signing with the team last summer, Lugo won the Gold Glove, earned an All-Star appearance and led the Royals to the American League Division Series. They haven’t made the play-offs since 2015.

Lugo finished the year with a 16-9 record and 3.00 ERA. He paired up with Cole Ragans to produce one of the best 1-2 punches in the American League.

For life, Lugo is 56-40 in his career. He plays with the New York Mets, San Diego Padres and Royals.

Lugo isn’t the only Royals player to win the award this year: Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. he also took home some hardware.

Lugo beat his teammate Cole Ragans and Angels shortstop Griffin Canning for the AL pitcher’s Gold Glove. Lugo and Ragans helped the Royals have one of the best rotations in baseball in 2024, but both have pitched their positions well. Lugo, who turned 35 on Nov. 17, committed no errors this year, becoming one of 10 AL pitchers to finish with a perfect 1.000 pitching percentage and make more than 30 starts. Lugo had more innings (206 2/3) than anyone else in this group.
