His notes from the Eagles’ win against the Jacksonville Jaguars

Quick notes on the Eagles’ performance in their 28-23 win over the Jaguars:

Quarterback: B

jalen hurts He was effective when he had to be in the air and on the ground. He had some questionable moments, but the point guard went for the fourth straight game without a turnover. He threw two beautiful goals to Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith and set up the eventual game-winning score by throwing a beauty downfield to the latter. Overall, he completed 18 of 24 passes for 230 yards.

The pain may have set in too early on a few occasions, but he had some nice tackles, including a 7-yard third-down rumble in which he lunged forward for a first down. He nearly escaped with an interception in the third quarter when Jaguars safety Andre Cisco failed to catch a tipped pass.

Running back: A-

Saquon Barkley He was still the best player on the field. He rushed 27 times for 159 yards and caught three passes for 40 yards. He was in a hurry and was scoring goals. Barkley left his jaw open once again with what may have been the first successful running back in NFL history. Barkley’s ridiculous leap came at the end of a 14-yard check-in catch in which he had already broken one tackle and walked away from another.

He made a difficult over-the-shoulder catch in the end zone and just inside the boundary for the Eagles’ first points of the first quarter this season. Just before intermission, Barkley ran for a 19-yard touchdown on a third-and-17 draw against the Jaguars’ phantom defense.

His fumble in the third quarter was rewarded with a touchdown and gave life to the Jaguars.

Kenneth Gainwell He threw a spell here and there at Barkley and finished with five carries for 9 yards. I am Van Sumeren He started at fullback. He caught his first NFL pass during a check-in. VanSumeren left the game just before halftime with a concussion.

Receiver/tight end: B

DeVonta Smith He was outstanding in the fourth quarter with balanced play. The wide receiver got behind the Jaguars defense for a 46-yard catch. A few plays later, Smith hit a one-handed, shuffling, spectacular 25-yard field goal in the back of the end zone to give the Eagles a 28-16 lead. He caught 4 of 6 targets for 87 yards that day.

A.J. Brown He left the game with a knee injury. He was slow to get back to his feet after his catch late in the second quarter. Brown took the field with his coaches after halftime, but soon went to the locker room, never to return. Brown caught two passes for 36 yards before leaving.

rookie receiver Ainias Smith He was involved in a jet sweep and a screen pass – both of which netted the Eagles’ small clearance. my rookie friend johnny wilson He briefly caught a touchdown just before halftime but was flagged for pass interference. While Brown was out, Cihan Dotson He caught his first and only target of the game (a 36-yard juggler) in the third quarter.

Grant Calcaterra He played in his third match as a substitute for the injured Dallas Goedert. The tight end was often Hurts’ go-to safety and caught five passes for 30 yards. Fellow tight end Jack Stoll had some nice running blocks. He made a false start on his fourth Tush Push attempt on the Eagles’ first drive.

Offensive line: B+

The O-line helped Barkley go over 100 yards for the fifth time this season. The team gave Hurts enough time for most of the game. fred johnson He hung in there in his third straight start at left tackle. Jaguars linebacker Josh Hines-Allen had two sacks from right tackle, but Johnson wasn’t entirely at fault. He was up and down as a run blocker. He led off Hurts’ touchdown run and was fumbled by Cisco, who was penalized for diving into the team’s knees.

right tackle lane johnson He was on an island against the Jaguars and Travon Walker kept his side clean. left guard landon dickerson played due to knee injury and along with center Cam Jurgens and right guard Mekhi BectonHe helped stop the Jaguars from rushing Hurts. After missing one game due to a concussion, Becton returned and made a number of key blocks.

Lane Johnson, Becton and Jurgens opened up a gap for Barkley to advance from 11 yards on the first lap. The last two included a combo block that paved the way for Barkley’s 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. Lane Johnson made an effective pull block on Barkley’s 13-yard rush down the left sideline in the third quarter. Jurgens had a key block on Barkley’s 19-yard touchdown pass at the second level. He had previously been flagged for sustaining the running game in the second round. Becton was defeated inside in the Jaguars’ campaign. He got off to a false start in the third quarter.

Defensive line: B+

The Eagles’ impressive defensive performance put everyone on the field. The D-line dominated the Jaguars up front, allowing just 60 yards on the ground. jalen carter It was the monster in the middle. The defensive tackle destroyed a blocker at the point of attack and stopped the run near the line in the second quarter. The Eagles didn’t use a lot of five-man fronts, but nose tackles Jordan Davis It helped protect the middle against the run. Milton Williams He ate blockers who helped off-ball defenders get closer to the ball.

The D-line was equally effective in the passing attack. Carter was in a few rushes. defensive end Josh Sweat Thanks in part to Williams’ initial pressure up the middle, the Jaguars went down on third down on the bull run on their first possession. Bryce Huff For whatever reason, he didn’t play until late in the second quarter. Eventually, the pressure built on the interior offense, which helped put together a third interception. He played sparingly the rest of the way.

Nolan Smith He played and played significantly more snaps than Huff. He had a relatively quiet game, but approached Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence and took him out of bounds in a brief tackle. Brandon Graham There has also been an increase in Huff’s snap count due to him watching more than playing. He went after Lawrence several times.

Defender: A

The Eagles’ off-ball defenders were effective in the victory. Zack Baun He was perhaps the best defender and led the team with 10 steals. He also made his first interception of the season and second of his career, intercepting a swinging pass in the second quarter. On Jacksonville’s first series, Baun had a pass breakup downfield. On the next play, he threw a block for a running tackle near the line. And a few plays later, he struggled in open field in control.

Dean of Nakobe He made a leaping catch on a game-ending interception. He wasn’t around the ball as much as Baun, but he didn’t suffer any major setbacks. The pass was broken up on a pass midway through the first quarter, and Jaguars running back Travis Etienne was in coverage when his bobble deflected toward Baun.

Corner: B+

Isaiah Rodgers I got external approval Massacre of Darius He stepped aside. Rodgers and his counterpart quinyon mitchell Take credit for keeping No. 1 receiver Brian Thomas in check. Thomas was questionable entering the game due to a chest injury, but his two catches for 22 yards showed how the Eagles’ cornerbacks performed.

nest corner Cooper DeJean He continued to shine in his first season. He plastered Jaguars tight end Evan Engram for a fourth-down pass breakup in the second quarter — a week after another big fourth-down pass breakup. One drive later, DeJean caught a sticky coverage pass on third down to receiver Austin Trammell and was hit in the turf himself. He outdueled Trammell on an 18-yard catch in the third quarter.

Avonte Maddox He didn’t play much in the Eagles’ penny personnel but was flagged for pass interference late in the game.

Security: B

The Eagles’ safeties played a key role in the Jaguars gaining just 32 yards in the first half. There were a few breakdowns at the back end as Lawrence was forced to make more passes after the break. However Reed Discharge And C.J. Gardner-Johnsonafter all, has never been thoroughly defeated.

Gardner-Johnson had a couple of loose moments on the Jaguars’ first touchdown pass, losing to Thomas on the two-point conversion. Blankenship got Engram to step up against him on the Jaguars’ next two-point conversion. He stopped the Jaguars’ first run of the second half for no gain.

Special teams: B+

Sydney Brown The Eagles made their first big play of the game when Trammell knocked the ball out of his hands on a punt return and Kelee Ringo recovered. The turnover set up the Eagles’ first goal. rookie Will Shipley There was a fight in the open field Braden Mann‘s second punt.

Mann averaged 45 net yards on three punts. Shooter Jake Elliott He was unpopular due to the Eagles’ punting and two-point conversions on fourth down. He connected on a 43-yard field goal and an extra point but missed a late 57-yarder. DeJean made fair catches on all four of his punt return attempts.

Coaching: B-

Nick Sirianni He was probably working up a sweat towards the end of a close game. He was on the losing end of a series of fourth-loss and two-point conversion gambles. However, the coach defeated the Eagles 6-2 and snapped a four-game winning streak ahead of league play against the Dallas Cowboys.

While the Tush Push wasn’t as effective on several failed two-point conversion attempts, Sirianni’s decision to attempt a fake sneak on fourth-and-inches late in the third quarter was controversial.

Kellen Moore He stayed true to the Eagles’ new run-based identity, but his offensive coordinator may have been too conservative against one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL. He had his good moments too. Moore set up the quarterback draw with a new crease that had Gainwell moving into the backfield, which led to Hurts getting into the end zone from 18 yards out. Ainias Smith scans and fake scans didn’t mean much.

Vic FangioHis defense was dominant in the first half, but not so much in the second half. There was a strong performance from his players in the last minutes of the match.
