A corrections officer accused of smuggling drugs into a Massachusetts medium-security prison in Shirley resigned last week, the Department of Corrections announced Sunday.

Roxsandra Wright is accused of delivering an article to an inmate. He allegedly brought synthetic cannabinoid-infused paper to MCI-Shirley.

“The Massachusetts Department of Corrections holds all personnel to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity,” DOC Interim Commissioner Shawn Jenkins said in a statement. “Any behavior that jeopardizes the safety and security of our facilities or undermines public trust will not be tolerated.”

Wright was arrested Saturday as part of an ongoing DOC and Massachusetts State Police investigation into narcotics entering prisons illegally. His resignation will be effective from October 31, the ministry said.

According to court documents, Wright was seen talking to Chon Son, an inmate, on live camera surveillance during respite last week. Son approached the staff office, which was restricted to inmates, and responded to Wright with two hand cannons.

“The son was seen making a gesture toward Office Wright and quickly picking up an unknown package and placing it in his left jacket pocket,” the criminal complaint said. “Son appeared to have another brief conversation with Wright, and Wright was seen walking around the desk in the office with a small roll of clean garbage bags in his hand.”

The son left the gym and was seen carrying the package from his pocket to the back of his pants, according to court records. The person was detained and searched, and the package was found in a blue latex glove inside a small plastic garbage bag “matching Wright’s roll,” the complaint said.

According to court documents, the package contained 45 strips of paper, amounting to approximately 15 full sheets of paper. The strips appeared wet and tested positive for a known synthetic cannabinoid, according to prosecutors.

Wright had previously submitted his resignation on Sept. 30 to move to New Jersey with his sister and work in the state’s department of corrections, according to court records.

When Wright was told Son had been captured, he tried to go home sick, according to court documents. He is expected to appear in Ayer District Court on Monday.
