The main route will be closed for a second day after a tanker overturned and spilled a “significant” amount of fuel.

The vehicle went off the A66 between the A591 at Keswick and the A5091 (Troutbeck), near Threlkeld in Cumbria, shortly after 05:00 GMT on Saturday.

National Highways said the tanker had been recovered but an “extensive repair and resurfacing operation” was “likely to take at least another day”.

Diversions are available, but trips will likely take much longer than normal, he added.
