North Bay residents reached deep into their pockets this election season, some pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into the presidential race, which is considered one of the most important in the nation’s history.

But if there was any question about who the district’s big donors favor, recent campaign finance reports leave no doubt: Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign received $10.5 million from individual donors in the six-county district north of San Francisco, while former President Donald Trump ‘s campaign received approximately $1.3 million.

When contributions to political action committees supporting both candidates are taken into account, donors in Sonoma, Napa, Marin, Mendocino, Lake and Solano counties gave a total of $18.4 million in the 2023-24 election cycle. The bulk of the donations came from Sonoma County, where donations reached $8.4 million, and Marin County, which reached $7.5 million, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Comprehensive amounts and rankings for individual donors in the presidential race and other federal campaigns can be difficult to determine. One reason is that people can also give money to organizations called “joint fundraising committees,” funneling some of that money directly to candidates’ campaigns and spending the rest on other political activities that benefit the candidate.

Some of the largest North Bay contributions benefiting Harris and Trump went to these joint fundraising committees, with individual contributions reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars. Because it is difficult to avoid to some extent double counting, with help from the Press Democrat, a nonprofit, nonpartisan campaign finance watchdog Open Secretsmade a separate accounting of joint fundraising committee, or JFC, donations to both candidates. In total, the JFC tab totaled approximately $17.7 million.

Harris-affiliated joint fundraising committees received about $15.5 million from the North Bay, while Trump joint fundraising committees received about $2.2 million in donations from the district.

Largest amount donated by an individual or organization in the six-county area, Federal Indians of Graton Rancheria contributed $4 million To a super PAC called Californians for Election whose goal is to rally pro-choice voters to defeat Trump and win key congressional districts in California.

During the current election cycle, the Sonoma County tribe that operates the Bay Area’s largest casino resort also made four donations totaling more than $1 million to the joint fundraising committee of the Biden Victory Fund, which later became the Harris Victory Fund.

As an example of money transfers between JFCs and campaigns, we see that $6,600 of that was sent directly to Harris’ campaign. Direct contributions to candidate campaigns are limited to $6,600 per election cycle.

Other names on the list of North Bay’s biggest donors for Harris include prominent millionaires and a number of billionaires, including Daniel Pritzker, an heir to the Chicago-based Pritzker family. Pritzker donated $900,000 to the Harris Victory Fund, making him the largest individual donor to the Harris joint fundraising committee. This also includes Colleen, Elise and Robert Haas, from the family behind San Francisco-based Levi-Strauss & Co. ($410,025).

Other notable names include prominent Bay Area attorney and Sebastopol resident Elizabeth Cabraser ($459,200); Harrison MillerMill Valley resident and senior advisor at Summit Partners, a global growth equity investment firm ($272,990); and Dee and Richard Lawrence, Greenbrae residents and co-founders Cool Effect, A nonprofit organization in the Bay Area that aims to reduce global carbon emissions ($563,200).

Napa Valley winery ownerreal estate investor and founder of the restaurant investment group behind 300 Taco Bell and 28 Arby’s franchise locations nationwide. Grieve’s $100,000 to the Trump Committee of 47 ranked him as the largest Trump JFC donor in the North Bay.

Donors to both Harris and Trump mentioned above either declined to comment or did not respond to repeated requests.
