MONTGOMERY, Ala.(WSFA) – – America’s Big Sister Foundation aims to empower young women to become independent and self-sufficient.

The sister of former NBA player Dwayne Wade, Dr. As a young girl, Tragil Wade-Johnson wanted a space where young girls could feel safe and empowered. Since he couldn’t find that field, he created it.

“When I first started, it was because of a field that I wanted as a teenager, and that’s what you do,” Wade-Johnson said. “I always say, if you feel like there’s a need and it bothers you, now you can be the one to build something and make it work, and I’m so grateful that there are so many women who feel the same way.”

The foundation currently tours the United States and holds conferences designed to empower young girls ages 9-18.

“A whole day; We line dance while recording, have a good time, that’s how we start the morning,” Wade-Johnson said. “But we will have panel conversations, we will have mental health conversations; For now, we are trying to plant seeds in their hearts and in the hearts of those who follow.”

Girls attending the conference learn all about self-confidence and what their next steps are. The conference aims to ensure these girls have the support to achieve their goals.

“I hope every girl here can feel important,” said Erica Sidney, Project Manager for America’s Big Sister Foundation. “For them to know that it’s okay to be around other girls and share your story; that your story could impact someone else.

Wade-Johnson says it’s important to empower these young girls because they are the future.
