Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetle-Jesus?

It’s always nice to have friends in high places so they can take you to even higher places. So is there any place higher than the Vatican?

In the last part Julia Louis-Dreyfus podcast, Wiser Than MeThe presenter sits with his comedy legend friend Catherine O’Hara talking about their early days improvising, being a funny woman in a comedy man’s world, and Vatican stories.

O’Hara met her husband, Bo Welch. Tim Burton all while working on 1988’s insect juice. Welch was the production designer on the film, and O’Hara “was grumbling to Tim that this guy talked to me every day and never asked me out,” so O’Hara says, “Tim Burton got him to ask me out.”

O’Hara and Welch married in 1992 and are still married, but Burton helped organize a private tour of the Vatican for the couple as a wedding gift. according to Schitt Creek star, someone had given Burton the same gift and he was “blown away”, so he “passed it on” to O’Hara and Welch.

O’Hara recalls that during tours of the Vatican, this “wild” priest took them everywhere, including the Pope’s closet and a private museum filled with gifts such as crowns and jewels in glass cases given to the Vatican from around the world. .

The priest tour guide allowed the newlyweds to open the cases and “pretend to take out the crowns and put them in my husband’s backpack.”

While they were having a happy old time in the Pope’s closet (“It’s not a big closet. It’s a small closet,” O’Hara notes), the tour guides actually got yelled at by another priest.

Louis-Dreyfus then shares the “Pope story”: Stephen Colbert and a bunch of other comedians and professionally funny people Invited to the Vatican to meet the Pope. His Holiness wanted to give a speech about “the importance of laughter and comedy and its spirituality.”
