Former NFL quarterback and social justice activist Colin Kaepernick has spoken out against former President Trump ahead of Tuesday’s election. report On Friday, The Wall Street Journal podcast “The Future of Everything.”

Kaepnerick protested Police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem at San Francisco 49ers games in 2016. Trump won the election that year and took responsibility for the lack of a contract that left Kaepernick no longer with the 49ers and playing in March 2017. Signed for another team.

“Them (NFL owners) I don’t want to receive a bad tweet from Donald Trump. Do you believe that?” Trump said at a rally in Louisville, Kentucky, on March 21, 2017.

Trump took a stronger stance on the issue during his infamous tirade at a rally for Republican Senator Luther Strange in September of that year. At that point, Kaepernick was no longer in the NFL, but other players around the league began to follow his example by kneeling during games.

“I remember one of these NFL owners, when someone disrespected our flag, they said, ‘Get this son of a bitch off the field right now. Out! He’s fired. He’s fired!’ Wouldn’t you like to see him say it? Trump said.

Trump reiterated his position less than a week later in an interview with “FOX & Friends” co-host Pete Hegseth.

“The NFL cannot disrespect our country. It cannot disrespect our flag or our national anthem,” Trump said. he said.

Kaepernick reflected on the incident during an interview on Friday, saying it was “easier for him to analyze than it was seven years ago.”

“I think one of the important elements to think about in that moment is what it actually meant for a president who was in office at the time to be willing to target a single citizen and use the power of his office to try to minimize an individual and his wishes. So, he I think looking back at the moment really impacts where we are today and the future we decide to build together,” Kaepernick said.

The former quarterback also detailed how he viewed the George Floyd riots in 2020.

“I think the fundamental part of this is that people can live better lives and people can live without the threat of death? I think that’s fundamentally the foundation of this, and if we take a step further, should people be discriminated against because of the color of their skin, their religion, where they live or their socioeconomic status?” ” Kaepernick said.

Kaepernick hasn’t played in the NFL since the 49ers released him following the 2016 season. Many coaches supported Kaepernick agrees He trained with teams in 2019, but no team signed a contract with him.

Kaepernick also settled a complaint against the NFL in 2019 that team owners colluded to keep him out of the league.

In the summer of 2020, Trump repeatedly advocated for teams to sign Kaepernick, but cautioned to do so only if the former quarterback “has the talent.”

During Friday’s interview, Kaepernick claimed that the 36-year-old follows a schedule where he wakes up at 3:30 a.m. every day so he can continue his NFL training in case a team wants to sign him. Kaepernick says he did all of this while working as the CEO of tech startup Lumi Story AI.
