Homeless shelter in Okmulgee County at risk of closing

OKMULGEE, Oklahoma — Okmulgee County homeless shelter staff say they need $20,000 to keep their doors open and continue giving homeless people a second chance.

John Burch Jr. is a shelter staff member who prepares lunch for the residents. But just over a year ago, Burch said life was very different.

“I was arrested and ordered by the court to stay somewhere to get my life back together, so I stayed here for about five months,” Burch said.

During those five months, Burch said he received his GED and ID. Staff said he was one of many people who stayed and found work or recovered from addiction.

Burch said the closure could be devastating for the four counties they serve.

“If the doors close, that means a lot of people won’t be able to get the helping hand they might need,” Burch said.

Staff said mismanagement by previous managers resulted in the need for funding. Rosie Lynch is interim executive director.

“Having finances means that someone, a child, a family, a single adult, can stay safe and find hope,” Lynch said.

I find even more hope for people like Burch.

“I’m so grateful, it helped me get my life back together. This place is a blessing,” Burch said.
