Washington, DC (7News) — A “Day of the Dead” celebration was held Saturday morning at D.C.’s Historic Congressional Cemetery, bringing together dozens of people.

“Day of the Dead” or Dia de Los Muertos is a Mexican holiday meant to honor one’s ancestors and reunite the living with their deceased loved ones. The chapel has been transformed into “a place of learning, remembrance and celebration,” according to a Congressional Cemetery press release.

“I have been in DC for 14 years and reside in the Capitol Hill area. I was born and raised in the Southwest, in Arizona and Texas. “I come from a Mexican-American family that has lived in the southwestern part of the country for generations,” said Rosa Moreno, a Capitol Hill resident. Day of the Dead is one of my favorite holidays because we take a day to celebrate it. We are very happy to come together this year to share this special day in such a historical and valuable place.

During the celebration, citizens were encouraged to bring photos of their deceased loved ones and mementos that represent them, such as foods, symbols, and things they loved.

As part of the event, flowers were also used to celebrate the holiday and honor those who died at the cemetery.
