Manchester United-Chelsea predictions

Manchester United interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy benefited from a new managerial bounce as he beat Leicester 5-2 in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, but Chelsea’s visit to the Premier League on Sunday will be a much tougher test for the Red Devils.

Van Nistelrooy oversaw United’s energetic, attacking display in midweek and will take charge of three more matches before the international break, after which new manager Ruben Amorim will take over.

Sporting Lisbon head coach Amorim will be United’s sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013 and has a staggering job at Old Trafford.

Wednesday’s win against the Foxes masked some of these issues, but that result should be taken with some caution given Leicester have been quite porous this season.

United have struggled in front of goal this season, scoring just eight goals in nine Premier League games, and last weekend’s 2-1 defeat against West Ham saw Erik ten Hag sent off and dropped them to 14th.

Playing under a new manager may boost the morale of United’s players, but their problems will not be solved overnight and Chelsea are well placed to expose their weaknesses.

The Blues lost 2-0 away to Newcastle in the EFL Cup on Wednesday, but Enzo Maresca changed his entire starting eleven and it was Chelsea’s B team who lost on Tyneside.

A top four finish looks imminent for the Londoners this term and it’s clear that’s the club’s focus ahead of a busy few months.

Maresca’s men have won four of their last six Premier League games, but dropped points in a 2-1 away defeat to Liverpool and a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

They look particularly dangerous up front this season, with Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson scoring 13 goals in the league, and their renewed attacking enthusiasm could give them an advantage at Old Trafford.

Palmer and Jackson were among a handful of Chelsea’s first-team players rested in midweek and should be fresher than United, who have lacked urgency and energy at the best of times this season.

Chelsea are six points clear of United and could extend that advantage to nine with a win on Sunday.
