CBP announces arrests of more than 40 people in maritime smuggling attempts off SoCal coastline

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the arrests of more than 40 people in maritime smuggling attempts during a 24-hour period off the coast of San Diego and Orange County.

The cases occurred from last Sunday through Monday along the Southern California coastline from Mission Bay to Newport Beach.

According to CBP, the first human trafficking incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Dana Landing in Mission Bay. 4 people involved in smuggling and 7 people, including the captain and crew of the boat, were detained.

According to CBP, the second case occurred just a few hours later, off the coast of Newport Beach; 16 people were arrested after eyewitnesses reported seeing them running from a boat; 22 life jackets were found next to the ship.

In the third incident, which occurred around 4 a.m. on Monday, 15 people were arrested after agents saw a boat dropping them off near Beacons Beach in Leucadia.

San Diego County Border Patrol and the Air and Maritime Branch made the arrests.

“With the winter months approaching, these extremely dangerous smuggling routes can lead to injuries and even fatal situations,” said Chief Patrol Agent Patricia McGurk-Daniel. “Our message was consistent: Do not leave your life in the hands of smugglers who promise you safe passage, only consider money and their own interests.”

“Smugglers continually put immigrants at risk with complete disregard for their safety,” said Brandon J. Tucker, Director of Air and Marine Operations for the San Diego Air and Maritime Branch. “The ocean is one of the most dangerous routes to attempt illegal entry into the United States. “Our representatives are dedicated professionals who use advanced technology and teamwork to protect our coastal and marine areas.”

CBP said everyone arrested was taken to local border patrol stations for processing.
