Giants Quarterback Drops Further in QB Power Rankings

The New York Giants continue to struggle to get positive production from their quarterback, Daniel Jones, who, while he has some upside, has failed to come up big when it matters most.

So it’s no surprise on CBS SPORTS Latest 2024 QB rankingsJones is now considered one of the worst quarterbacks in the league (29th out of the top 32 players).

Against Pittsburgh on Monday night, Jones faced one of the league’s best defenses. Despite being under a lot of pressure, Jones completed 24 of his 38 passes for no touchdowns and one interception in the 26-18 loss.

He had a chance to tie the game late in the game when he failed to call the right guard on a strip/fumble recovery by TJ Watt and then made a poor interception on a pass to running back Devin. The single ended the game by completely missing Theo Johnson’s open position in the middle of the field.

The Giants are in dire need of positive quarterback play as fans and the organization grow increasingly impatient. Currently, the Giants sit in last place in the NFC East at the halfway point of the season.

The Giants’ core pieces are great, but they rank 27th in total offense and continue to struggle with red zone production, among other things.

The offensive struggles have increased calls for the Giants to bench Jones and move forward with backup Drew Lock or Tommy Devito to help bring new energy and life to this offense.

Although Jones isn’t the only culprit, his performance doesn’t reflect the $160 million contract extension he received through 2023.

At this stage of the season, the Giants face a difficult decision. They’re not that far away from getting back into contention for a potential wild card spot, but it’s going to take a lot to make that happen. The consolation if they continue to lose is that they will increase their draft position which will help them build for the future.

The Giants should bench Jones for a better future. They don’t have much to gain and they desperately need new energy surrounding this young team. They will also eliminate the threat of a $23 million injury guarantee that would kick in if Jones were injured.

Last season, when Jones and veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor suffered injuries that put them on IR, Tommy Devito stepped up and brought new hope to MetLife Stadium. Devito threw for 1,010 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions; The Giants offense played with more energy and found more success.

But head coach Brian Daboll remained committed to starting Jones, at least for now. With the Giants having a much more talented team than their record suggests, it’s fair to wonder how much longer he’ll be left with the quarterback if the defeat continues.
