SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County District Attorney’s Office provided more Details of a 31-year-old man who briefly fled Bexar County deputies after being sentenced to life imprisonment.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, 31-year-old Antoine Foster was being loaded onto a transport vehicle from the Bexar County Justice Center on Thursday afternoon.

Foster, who prosecutors said was in a wheelchair, jumped out of the wheelchair and ran several blocks near the San Antonio River.

Deputies said they caught Foster later, and Foster was taken into custody again around 5:45 p.m. Foster faces an additional escape charge, the prosecutor’s office said.

“We support our San Antonio police officers and are grateful that these officers were not harmed,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said in a statement Friday. “Our office will continue to seek justice for all victims of crime, especially those who risk their lives every day to keep our community safe.”

Foster was convicted Thursday of two counts of attempted capital murder of a peace officer and two counts of aggravated assault on a public servant. A jury sentenced him to life in prison on attempted capital murder charges stemming from the July 2020 incident.

When officers arrived, the prosecutor’s office said Foster fired about two dozen shots at officers: 17 of those shots from a handgun and five from a shotgun.

Officers returned fire at Foster, who was injured and later taken to a local hospital in critical condition. However, Foster did not suffer any life-threatening injuries from the exchange of gunfire.
